RON ALEXANDER, RMT
Functional Fascial Taping Practitioner [FFTP]: Director / Founder of the Functional Fascial Taping Institute Melbourne, Australia, and co-investigator for Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial of FFT for Non-Specific Low Back Pain [Shu-Mei Chen‘s PhD] Deakin University Melbourne, Australia. Mr Alexander founded FFT during an 8 year appointment to The Australian Ballet. He was awarded the Lady Southey Scholarship for Excellence from the Australian Ballet Foundation. Mr Alexander also presented FFT to the International Olympic Committee World Congress, the Royal College of Surgeons UK and the Fifth and Sixth Interdisciplinary World Congress on Lower Back and Pelvic Pain. Assisting Ron Alexander is Chris Murphy, MCSP, MSc, MMACP: Director of PhysioUK and former Lecturer MSc Manips course at the University of Brighton. Mr Murphy is currently a guest lecturer for the University of Brighton, Coventry University and Nottingham University Masters Programmes. His special interests are foot and ankle and he is also a Functional Fascial Taping Practitioner and a regular instructor on the FFT UK courses.
SUSAN CHAPELLE, RMT
Susan Chapelle has been a practicing therapist for over 17 years. She is the recipient of the 2010 award for registered massage therapist of the year for British Columbia for her contribution to research in the field of manual therapy. Ms. Chapelle has been voted best RMT in Squamish 7 years in a row. She continues her practice in BC, and is the owner of Squamish Therapeutics, a multidisciplinary clinic in Squamish BC. Ms. Chapelle is involved in her community by educating on the importance of complementary medicine. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, the Squamish Hospice Association, and the Business Improvement Association. Ms. Chapelle continues her work to examine the effects of manual therapy. She is currently collaborating with Geoffrey Bove, D.C, PhD at the University of New England, and the Massage Therapists‘ Association of British Columbia. Ms. Chapelle‘s recent publication, Visceral Mobilization Can Lyse and Prevent Peritoneal Adhesions in a Rat Model is in press, in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies.
JULIE ANN DAY, PT
Originally from South Australia, Julie is currently living in Padova, Italy. Physiotherapist since 1977, she has worked mostly in the Orthopaedic field. Specialized in Connective Tissue Massage (Dicke, Teirich-Leube methods) and Foot Reflexology, Julie has also explored various forms of therapeutic exercise (Feldenkrais, Hatha Yoga). Involved in Fascial Manipulation since 1999, she is an authorized teacher of this method since 2002 and translator (from Italian to English) of Fascial Manipulation for Musculoskeletal Pain, L. Stecco, (Nuova Libraria Piccin, 2004.) and Fascial Manipulation – Practical Part, L. and C. Stecco, (Nuova Libraria Piccin, 2009.). Julie has presented workshops on Fascial Manipulation in Holland, USA and Canada and has taught courses in Italy, Poland and USA.
WILLEM FOURIE, PT
Mr. Fourie has thirty five years clinical experience in the Mining Industry and Private Practice. His interest is in musculoskeletal dysfunction after surgery or injury – notably post breast cancer treatment. The emphasis of Mr. Fourie‘s work is on understanding fascial relationships through dissection, resulting in an evaluation and therapy model presented in workshops internationally.
Recent engagements include: keynote speaker at the 2nd International Fascia Research Congress (Amsterdam), the Royal Dutch Physiotherapy Society Annual Congress, invited speaker for the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women‘s Health conference in Bournemouth, UK and at a Vocational Research Congress of the American Massage Foundation in Seattle.
ANN FREDERICK
Ann Frederick is a KMI Certified Structural Integrator and the director of Fascial Stretch Therapy™ (FST™) at the Stretch to Win Center (STWC) in Tempe, AZ, USA. In 1997, Ms. Frederick conducted a research study at Arizona State University comparing static stretch of the hamstrings with a modified PNF stretch that she developed. The outcome had statistical significance with lasting ROM gains of 36% – 52% in the modified PNF group. For the last 35 years, Ms. Frederick has developed FST into a comprehensive full body manual and movement therapy integrating innovative structural, neural and circulatory techniques.
CHRIS FREDERICK, PT
Chris Frederick is a KMI Certified Structural Integrator and the director of physical therapy at the STWC. He is lead instructor with his wife Ann Frederick at the Stretch to Win Institute, where students get certified in FST. Mr. Frederick has been a manually oriented physical therapist for twenty-two years, with a deep and broad background in professional dance, tai chi, qigong and martial arts. He has collaborated with his wife since 1999 to develop FST as a full body therapy as well as a medical therapy for specific indications. Mr. Frederick combines FST with Structural Integration to further individualize optimal responses to fascial re-organization and movement education.
BARBARA FRYE, LMP, GCFP
Ms. Frye is a licensed massage therapist and guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner, in private practice for over 20 years. She is the author of Body Mechanics for Manual Therapists, 3rd Edition, columnist for Massage and Bodywork Magazine, and an American Massage Therapy Association national convention speaker. Teaching manual techniques for much of her career, Ms. Frye is currently on staff at the internationally renowned Pluspunkt-Zentrum for Therapy and Advanced Studies near Zurich, Switzerland. She is forever discovering the rich and endless fascial landscape of the body, mind, and spirit.
CHRIS HAGEY, RMT, SOMATIC EXPLORATIONS PRESIDENT
Chris has been a Registered Massage Therapist since graduating from Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 1993. He was first introduced to gross anatomy while a student, as CCMH had a great relationship with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and the massage therapists were granted access to the cadavers being used by the Chiropractic students. He was hooked.
Chris went on to both practice and teach in Ontario, Florida, and finally BC where he became the Director of Practical Education for the West Coast College of Massage Therapy from 2002 – 2007. He was also fortunate enough to have ties to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster. For the last 8 years, Chris has accompanied the naturopathic students to their anatomy dissections in Saskatoon or Seattle and has been a well respected instructor.
Having performed over 56 dissections and spent countless hours in the lab, Chris is finally living his dream of being able to share the incredible mysteries found in the human body with all health care providers in western North America.
MIKE HAMM, LMP, CCST
Mr. Hamm strives to create dynamic courses in anatomy, research literacy, and manual therapy techniques. As a traveling presenter for the Massage Therapy Foundation, he works to bridge the gap between science and bodywork practice. Mr. Hamm has written articles for various bodywork publications, and serves as a reviewer for the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (IJTMB). When not teaching or practicing bodywork, he plays music in a Seattle band.
DIANA KINCAID, LMT
Diana Kincaid, LMT, has twenty nine years of clinical experience in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. After studying lymph drainage in the United States, she became certified in Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy (lymphedema treatment) at the Földi College in Germany in 1999. She has been an educator for twenty years. She served as the national chair of the Ethics and Standards committee for the American Massage Therapy Association from 1999-2003, receiving a national award for her service. Committed to high standards in the profession, in 2004 she became a Trustee for the Massage Therapy Foundation, where she became Founder and chair of the Best Practices committee.
RAÚL MARTÍNEZ RODRÍGUEZ, PT, DO
Mr. Martinez is a physiotherapist and osteopath, who has been dedicated to elite athletes treatment for over 15 years. He is the Spanish National Football Federation Physiotherapy coordinator, having participated in the last three World Cup editions (Korea and Japan 2002, Germany 2006 and recently South Africa 2010). Mr. Martinez is a Professor at the European (UEM) University of Madrid, co-directing the fascial therapy course, as well as participating in different Masters related to manual therapy. He was the co-organizer of I and II Fascia Research Congress replay in Spain. Mr. Martinez is currently directing Osteopathy and Physiotherapy Centre Tensegrity, where sonoelastography is being developed as a clinical tool for manual therapy collaborating with Hitachi Medical System Spain.
LAURIE MCLAUGHLIN, PT, DSC, FCAMPT, CMAG
Dr. McLaughlin graduated from McMaster University, received her Advanced Diploma of Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy with distinction and completed a Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy. She has developed and taught continuing education manual therapy courses in North America, Europe and Australia. Dr. McLaughlin is a national examiner for physiotherapists specializing in orthopaedics in the USA and Canada serving as a Chief Examiner for Canada from 1999 to 2005. She is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University, a member of the HaNSA (Head and Neck, Shoulder, Arm) research team and a member of the Canadian Spine Society and the Spine Expert Committee for the Ministry of Health.
MARTHA BROWN MENARD, PHD, CMT
Martha Brown Menard, PhD, CMT, is a health care research scientist, massage therapist, and educator. She is the author of Making Sense of Research, a guide to research literacy for health care practitioners. Dr. Menard is currently the principal of Sigma Applied Research in Charlottesville, Virginia, a company providing research design, data analytics, program evaluation, and grant writing services to organizations and individuals. During her 29 years as a clinical practitioner, she has served as a volunteer leader with several national organizations, including the Massage Therapy Foundation and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
TOM MYERS, LMT
Thomas Myers studied with Drs. Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, and Buckminster Fuller, and has practiced integrative bodywork for over 30 years in Europe, the UK, and the USA. He incorporates many movement and manual disciplines into his training programs. Tom is the author of the best-selling book, Anatomy Trains (2nd ed. Elsevier 2009), as well as over 60 articles for trade magazines and journals, and a dozen video programs on fascial technique and dissection. He directs Kinesis, which offers professional and CE training worldwide.
LARS REMVIG, MD, DMSC
Dr. Remvig graduated from the Medical School, University of Copenhagen, and specialized afterwards in Internal Medicine and in Rheumatology. He aquired the DMSc-degree from the University of Copenhagen, based on the Thesis: Cellular cytokine bioassays in interleukin-1 quantitation. Dr. Remvig has published 50 scientific articles, and written/edited Textbooks in Musculoskeletal Medicine and in Manual Techniques. He is working as senior consultant at the department of Rheumatology, Rigshospitalet, University Hospital of Copenhagen, with particular responsibility for and interest in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and other syndromes characterised by joint hypermobility. At present Dr. Remvig is chairing the International Academy of Musculoskeletal Medicine, www.iammm.net.
ANTONIO STECCO, MD, PM&R
Dr. Stecco is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery, and specialized in Physics Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Padua, Italy. His areas of prevalent scientific and clinical interest are anatomy of the fascia corporis via dissections and histological studies, including immunohistochemical and molecular biology; study and clinical application of hyaluronic acid; and myofascial syndrome. Since 2008, Dr. Stecco has been on the Scientific Committee of the Fascial Manipulation Association, which brings together researchers interested in studying diseases of the fascia and myofascial origin. He is the author of more then twelve articles published in international journals and co-author of three books.
DIANA L. THOMPSON, LMP
Ms. Thompson has been a licensed massage therapist for over twenty-five years, and has a private practice in Seattle, WA, treating acute and chronic neuromusculo-skeletal and lymphatic disorders, specializing in post-operative care. She authored Hands Heal: Communication, Documentation and Insurance Billing for Manual Therapists— the fourth edition is due out in July. Ms. Thompson has a regular column in Massage and Bodywork Magazine, titled Somatic Research. She lectures at massage, acupuncture, midwifery, chiropractic, physician and physical therapy conferences internationally and is a consultant for massage therapy research with The Research Institute at Group Health in Seattle. Ms. Thompson is a past President of the Massage Therapy Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the knowledge and practice of massage therapy by supporting scientific research, education, and community service.
